Author: In the midst of an economic crisis, there are many careers that are in danger. Even those who felt perfectly safe in their jobs are starting to feel the negative effects of an economy turned upside down. It’s a sign of the times and a rather unfortunate one at that. Fortunately for certain professions, the economy doesn’t seem to be a factor. Though these professions are few and far between, there are some that are just thriving in the middle of what others may call a bit of a depression. Nursing happens to be one career that is booming in an already dominant healthcare industry. So what is it about nursing that makes it such an in demand career?
Patient Care is Always Required
The great thing about nursing is that there is always a need. No matter what happens with the economy, there are always patients in need of care in one capacity or another. Through all of the different specializations and paths that a nurse can take in her career, there are many different potential avenues for nurses to take. This all means that in spite of shortages in other fields or not enough jobs to meet the demand, there is almost always a need for nurses. For those in the field, this comes as great news as they can move about and really thrive in their careers. For those wishing to enter the field, this comes as welcome news as it ensures that there will be a job waiting for them.
Catching Up from a Shortage
It wasn’t that long ago that there was a shortage of nurses that was rather wide spread. This caused some serious damage to the nursing profession as the demand for nurses far outweighed the number of qualified candidates. There is still some backlash from that as many places can’t seem to keep up with their needs, and it trickles down from the shortage that occurred. Though the shortage happened a few years back, there is still a lot to do to catch up with things and ensure that hospitals and medical facilities get the nurses that they need to fill the job openings that they have. Many people don’t realize just how lasting of an effect a shortage can have in a given profession.
More Responsibilities Being Given to Them
The reality is that as the medical field changes shape and technology becomes ever more present, more and more responsibilities are being given to nurses. This is good for them as it means more job openings, but may be questionable to patients and other members of the medical staff. So while nurses are already enjoying a boom in their field, the level of responsibilities being given to them continues to grow and add to their allure. They are handling things that they never did before, and are capable of doing so. Particularly with the evolution of roles such as nurse practitioners, they can do almost the same things as a doctor can. This is all good news for nurses everywhere who are hopeful for a long and fulfilling career in their field.
